Many wheelchair users consider sliding “pocket” doors easier to operate than swinging doors. The pocket door’s primary advantage is that it slides sideways into the adjacent wall. Because the door doesn’t swing, there are no arc to clear during the operation. When stored, pocket doors don’t take up floor or wall space.
Pocket doors, however don’t fit every location without sufficient wall length. The “pocket” also eliminates available wall space for electric switches, outlets, air ducts and other functions. Pocket walls needs to thicker than most interior partitions and you must select your “pull” hardware. Recessed edge hardware is the best in saving more space but can be more difficult for those with low hand functions to grab.
